Autoparts Garage Equipment gives NTDA winner Kimberley tools for success

Since being crowned 2017 NTDA Tyre Technician Apprentice of the Year, Kimberley Locker has been reaping the benefits of her industry win. Prize sponsor Autoparts Garage Equipment, leading automotive equipment supplier, reflects on her achievement to date as she offers some inspiring advice for young apprentices.

Since winning the award, Kimberley has been promoted to Assistant Manager and is now based in the STS Tyre Pros depot in Aylesbury. She was also delighted with her Matco tool box, donated by Autoparts Garage Equipment and is already putting it to good use.

Describing her win as “an amazing feeling”, she said that she “felt honoured and proud”, proving to herself that all the hard work she had put in over the previous two years had paid off and been acknowledged.

Kimberley said: “When I first started my apprenticeship I wasn’t 100% sure it was the field of work that I wanted to be in, but it didn’t take me long to realise that I was in the right place and in the right hands. I completed my apprenticeship early, after receiving some fantastic training, and went on to become the assistant manager of the (Aylesbury) centre I was based in.”

Her passion for apprenticeship schemes has come as a result of her own experience, which she credits as fuelling her personal development by helping her grow. She has since delivered several presentations at her old secondary school, to encourage pupils to consider apprenticeships after they finish their studies as a promising career option.

Kimberley explained: “I also urged the girls not to be afraid to enter a male dominated industry, as you can still thrive and be the best if you’re female!

“In the future I hope to be involved with looking after and assessing apprentices because I want to help young people become the best version of themselves and help inspire a positive attitude towards women in the motor industry. I truly believe that a decent apprenticeship is the most powerful way to teach young people coming into this trade from school and I want to be involved with that as much as possible!”

Autoparts Garage Equipment is one of the UK’s largest garage equipment companies and was established in 1996. It is involved with the sales, installation and servicing of a vast range of garage equipment and workshop tools including vehicle lifts, MOT equipment, tyre changers, emission testers and wheel balancers.

John Mcardle, Autoparts Garage Equipment Division General Manager, said: “We were delighted to present Kimberley with her very own Matco tool box and she deserves every success. It’s fantastic that she has excelled since winning the award, and we’ve no doubt that she’ll be a positive role model, not just to young people considering an apprenticeship in the field, but also to young women wanting to carve out a career in a male-dominated profession.”

East Kilbride hero and Autoparts employee, Sean Winter, faces huge dilemma

East Kilbride’s semi-professional footballer, Sean Winter, who also works within the independent aftermarket as a parts representative for Autoparts UK, faces one of the toughest decisions of his life: play Celtic in the Scottish Cup or fly to Australia on his dream, family holiday.

Winter, who has been a parts representative at Autoparts UK for 10 years, has scored in every round of the Scottish Cup for East Kilbride during the campaign. He even got the goal that secured their place in the fifth-round tie against Celtic, yet his chances of playing in the match on February 7 look unlikely as he has already booked a special holiday to Australia for the previous week that will cost thousands of pounds to alter.

After defying medical staff and playing with a broken hand, Winter has more than played his part in getting his team to this stage of the competition.

The midfielder has more than 200 appearances for Stranraer and helped the team reach the League One playoffs in 2015, but chose to turn down big-money offers to play for his hometown team.

Although the trip had been arranged before the start of the season, which would not be allowed if he still played for an SPFL club, with the Lowland League team successfully reaching the final 16 of the competition, Winter is now forced to make one of the biggest decisions of his life.

Winter said: “It’s a huge opportunity for the club and myself, but the circumstances are incredibly unfortunate. Quite a large section of my family are going to Australia too as we’re visiting my sister-in-law in Perth, and with it being booked for over a year, it’s more than just your average holiday.

“I’ve loved every moment of playing in the Scottish Cup with East Kilbride this season and hope we can progress even further and do the unthinkable by beating favourites, Celtic. However, I don’t think it’s looking like I’ll be a part of the match.

“It’s such a great feeling knowing I’ve played such a big part in helping the team get into this remarkable position, and firing home the winner in the fourth round was something dreams are made of!

“I grew up in East Kilbride and Celtic are my boyhood heroes so playing in this game would be something special. It’ll be hard, but I’ll be cheering on the boys from the other side of the world and hoping we can defy the odds and push onto the quarter-finals – now, that would be something special.”

Craig McCracken, group factor manager said: “Sean has certainly created a buzz around the branch with customers and fellow colleagues, who have all congratulated him on his achievements so far.

“After scoring in every round, his growing excitement has been clear for everyone at Autoparts to see. It’s incredibly unfortunate that the circumstances have fallen out of his favour, but we’ll be sure to cheer on East Kilbride in honour of Winter on the day.”

Autoparts UK, an IAAF distributor member, is sponsoring the IAAF conference at ICC, Birmingham taking place on 17 December 2015.

The conference aims to examine current issues from both the UK and Europe, highlight the main changes from both a technical and a market perspective and consider what opportunities are available for the future.

Autoparts has more than 25 years’ experience in the automotive aftermarket sector and is using the conference to continue its promotion of exclusive brands in the sector.

More than 100 aftermarket personnel will be in attendance, eager to gain the latest industry information, as well as advice and support regarding current activity in the automotive aftermarket. This includes legislation affecting the industry or recent IAAF lobbying activity.

The following speakers are confirmed: Dr. Ben Wood – International Institute for Product and Service Innovation WMG, University of Warwick, Neil Pattemore – FIGEFA, Steve Carter – eXponentia, Peter Golding – FleetCheck, Quentin Le Hetet – GiPA and Peter Seagrott – Factor Sales.

The conference will include developments on the connected car and we will glimpse into the future with a realistic look at how far away the 3D printed car is, along with all its components. The mainstream media have portrayed 3D printing as the future of manufacturing with suggestions that traditional processes will soon become obsolete. But what is the truth behind the hyperbole? Conference delegates will hear from an industry leading expert, Dr. Ben Wood who will offer a pragmatic view on this question with reference to the automotive industry, and the potential impact that 3D printing might have on the automotive parts manufacturing industry in future.

Craig McCracken, group factor manager said: “The conference is a great area for debate on various industry issues and we are delighted to sponsor it for a second year. Our sponsorship is part of plans to grow the Autoparts brand, as well as our development into new areas of the automotive aftermarket such as in the supply of tyres.”

“Electric service” from Autoparts UK

Renault Twizzy first deliveryCustomers of Autoparts UK will have their parts orders delivered rapidly by a brand-new fleet of unique Renault Twizy electric cars.

The multi-award winning, 12-branch motor factor has invested in the new environmentally-friendly vehicles as part of a drive to reduce its carbon footprint. The cars will mainly operate from the company's branches in Glasgow & Dundee, delivering a rapid deployment of parts under its exclusive brands including Padtech brake pads, Disctech discs and Ultratech oils.

The Renault Twizy is a twin-seater car that is powered by a 17bhp electric motor. Its battery can be recharged by plugging into any 220V power source.

Regency Auto Engineers Ltd is one of the first garages to benefit from the new Autoparts Renault Twizy delivery. Kenny Scott said: "The Twizy is a fascinating bit of kit and the rapid parts supply from Autoparts means we can get on with our work, meaning no downtime. We've been working with Autoparts for many years and their service is always of the highest level."

Autoparts UK group factor manager, Craig McCracken, believes that using electric vehicles is a good move when rapidly delivering parts and accessories orders to customers in and around Glasgow & Dundee.

He said: "The Renault Twizy has a 62-mile range on a full battery and it only needs £1 worth of electricity to complete a full charge. We have a large number of customers in central Glasgow and Dundee so using a vehicle like this to complete our rapid deliveries makes perfect sense.

"By using electric power, we can deliver the high-quality service that our customers expect – and significantly reduce our carbon footprint at the same time. That gives us and our customers the best of both worlds."

Autoparts UK crowned IAAF distributor of excellence 2014

Autoparts UK has won the IAAF distributor of excellence award at the IAAF 2014 Annual Conference & Awards Dinner.

The leading parts distributor, which has 12 branches throughout the UK, saw off stiff competition from rival distributors throughout the UK.

The hotly contested IAAF awards cover four individual categories. They are: Distributor of Excellence Award (passenger car), Supplier of Excellence Award (passenger car), Commercial Vehicle Distributor of the Year and Commercial Vehicle Supplier of the Year Award.

For the IAAF Excellence Awards, nominees have to provide entries to IAAF, which are then assessed by a panel of expert judges, selected by the IAAF for their experience in the independent aftermarket.

To ensure total fairness, all entries submitted are made anonymous before judging, and the finalists' identities are only revealed to the judges for ratification or further investigation, which can include site visits and mystery shopping.

Craig McCracken, Autoparts UK Group Factor Manager, said: "This is an unbelievable achievement for Autoparts UK and demonstrates how far we have come as a business. We continue to innovate the market, launching new products and services designed to support a garage business and so it's extremely gratifying to have the efforts and achievements of everyone in the business acknowledged in this way."
